At the age of 12 Mother Teresa felt a calling of God and wished to become a missionary of Christ. At a young age Mother Teresa decided to serve through helping poor people. At the Age of 18 she joined a group of Nuns in Ireland. After a getting a few months training from there she went to Calcutta. In Calcutta she formally accepted the vows of Nuns. In the start she worked as teacher in poor areas of Calcutta. There the widespread poverty left a great impact on her life. As a result of this she started a mission which is named as “The Missionaries of Charity”. The main reason behind starting this mission was to take care of those people, who nobody else was prepared to. The branches of the Missionaries of charity are now found through out the world. In developed countries these are working for homeless and people affected with AIDS. Mother Teresa was awarded with many awards for her achievements. Beside that she was also awarded with many other awards for her efforts which includes Padma Shri award for great service in 1962, The Pope John XXIII Peace Prize, Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985 and Congressional Gold Medal in 1997. Mother Teresa never got scared of the trouble. She was lady of great strength. In last two decades of life she suffered from great health problems. But still she continued her mission. Nothing could dissuade her from helping and serving poor people. Later on she became very weak due to long illness but still even at that time she used to travel the world wide branches of Missionaries charity. She died at the age of 87 on September 5, 1997. Although she is no more in the world but it should be worth mentioning that she was a living saint who left a great example and inspiration for the world. |
