Nano Nagel was born in 1718 in Ireland. 1718 is remembered as the miserable time period in Irish history especially in area of education. At that time people were condemned to life of ignorant. Every school was closed teachers were silenced. Any catholic who was found teaching anyone are subject to heavy fines, confiscations and even imprisonment. That’s why Irish people used to send their children overseas for education. Nano belonged to a wealthy family and her parents were well aware of the importance of the education. That’s why her parents send her to France to continue her education. She got her earliest education from hedge school. Nano lost her father in 1746. After the death of her father Nano returned to Ireland along with her younger sister Ann. One day Nano asked her younger sister if she can make her a dress form silk she bought from France.



To her astonishment her younger sister sold that material to help the poor family. Ann died shortly after this event. The death of her loved once and sympathy of her younger sister for poor people left a great impact on Nano's life. Nano started thinking about the poor children of Ireland. She holds a desire of continuing the mission of her younger sister and desperately wanted to do something for poor people. But she was unaware of how to start this work. Later on she joined a French convent but her thoughts continued to return to the terrible conditions of her homeland. After some time she returned back to Ireland with determination of serving a poor children by teaching them. Nano Nagel was left with a large sum of money after the death of her uncle. She used that money to build school and convent for the relief of the poor people. In the beginning she started her mission in secrecy but later own seeing the benefits of her institutions the aggressive authorities relax their observation.



Nano was a very intelligent and determined kind of women. She worked hard for long time for the establishment of her schools. She used to visit poor and sick people herself. She never got scared of the troubles and even visited the poorest part of the town in Lantern light. That’s why she was also known among the people as Lady of the Lantern. Beside that she opened home for aged women. At the age of 57 Nano laid a foundation of the society for charitable Instruction. For the rest of her life she continued to live and work in that community.Nano Nagle died on 26th of April 1784.She was the woman of high determination. Nano disposed her self from wealth and pleasure of life for poor people. Her devotion, her love for the children, struggle for justice became a source of inspiration for those who carry on traditions and value of Presentation teachers.
