on Sep 26, 2009J. Bruce Ismay was the managing officer of the one of the leading ship operating company named White Star Line. He together with Lord James Pirrie set a plan to build three such ships which could set a new standard for luxury and elegance. They decided to name those ship Olympic, Titanic and Britannic. Work on Olympic was started in December of 1908. While work on Titanic started in March 1908. Size of Titanic was 883 feet in length, 92 feet in width and it weighed around 46,328 tons. It was around 104 feet tall from keel to bridge. Out of this almost 35 feet were below the waterline. Even still, Titanic stood taller above the water than most urban buildings of the time. The ship contained all those facilities which its passenger had never enjoyed in their homes. All of its rooms were provided with the electric light and heating system. There were three tall smoke stacks and fourth dummy stack in it. These smokes stacks help in carrying out the smoke from its huge kitchens and gallery. The size and luxurious style of the Titanic quickly made the ship as a legend, even before the first voyage. This largest movable object ever made by the man was officially launched on April 10, 1912 from England. The ship was having space of carrying more than 2,200 passengers and crew members. Titanic was equipped with 16 lifeboats having space of carrying 68 passengers at a time. In its first transatlantic voyage to New York the ship sailed towards France to pick the passengers then to the Queenstown, Ireland. The first three days of voyage passed without any incident. The ship received the 5 iceberg warnings throughout the 4th day but the Capitan of the ship decided not to slow down. At 11:40 PM the ice berg was spotted and notified. At the warning, the ship was turned hard to the port. The engine room got a signal of reversing the direction. After a long effort the ship moved slightly but could not avoid the iceberg. Titanic was tore by 300 feet long hole by collision with the ice berg. The compartments in the basement began filling with water. 25 minutes into the crash, the lifeboats were uncovered and passengers were prepared for evacuation. The first life boat was launched with only 28 passengers despite having carrying capacity of more passengers. After the last life boat 1500 passengers were left on the board. At around 2:10 AM, the front part of the ship rose out of the water and due to its weight the ship got split in two. The front part after some time started to slowly sink into the water and the ship got drowned into the ocean carrying 1500 souls with it. The Titanic disaster is the greatest marine disaster of the history. The disaster itself and the survivors became the subject of four movies and countless books. The famous Titanic movie written by James Cameron is the most expensive movie ever made in the film industry history. The movie had a great success of wining 11 academy awards and remains the highest grossing movie of all times to date. |
