Labor Day is basically the special day off which is set to honor and encourage labor for their contribution which they make to society. There is confusion and doubts about the history of Labor Day that when or by whom it was actually started. On April 15, 1872 the first North American workingman’s demonstration was organized by Toronto trade assembly. Toronto trade assembly is the original labor body in Canada. About 10,000 people came out to watch the parade and listen to the speeches. That parade was about raising voice for abolition of law according to which the trade unions are the criminal plan in restraint of trade.
On September 3, 1872 a parade was organized by the member of seven unions in Ottawa Canada. That parade stretched to almost more than a mile. The parade stopped at home of Sir John A. MacDonald. Sir MacDonald was the prime minister and he was very well aware about the dissatisfaction of the labor about the law according to which labor union is illegal. So he made a decision to remove all such laws from the statute books. These laws were then later on canceled by the parliament and thus the tradition of holding parades continued in 1880’s. On July 22, 1882 an annual parade was organized by the successor of the Toronto trade assembly that is Toronto trade and labor council. Peter J. McGuire of New York also attends that. Matthew Maguire who was the secretary of the International Association of Machinists proposed a holiday for labor in 1882. That day was suggested as an honor to the workers by the Peter J. McGurine who was the co-founder of the American federation of Labor. The First labor day was held on September 5, 1882 by the Central Labor Union in Network’s second labor day was later held on September 5, 1883. In 1884 the first Monday of the September was declared as the labor holiday by central labor union. They recommend to same organization in other cities to celebrate Labor Day on that day. The law of making Labor Day as an official holiday was passed on February 21, 1887.
And today Labor Day is an important holiday. And it is celebrated through out the world. It is fact that Labor day was set by the activities of trade union but it should be celebrated by all those whose skills and efforts in different jobs give the material to fulfill the necessities of the society.
