on Sep 4, 2009Alzheimer is a progressive disorder which attacks the brain and result in mental confusion, impaired memory, thinking and judgment. This disease also results in behavioral changes. This behavior changes in combination with disorientation and memory loss is also called dementia. This disease affects man and women equally. Mostly people having this disease are older than 65. With growing age risk of Alzheimer disease increases. Older age and family history of dementia have more risk of Alzheimer. Not one factor can be cause of this disease. Alzheimer Disease is the result of the genes and environmental factors. Some common symptoms of the Alzheimer Disease are gradual memory loss, decline in ability to perform normal task, disorientation, difficulty in learning, loss in language skills, impairment of judgment and personality changes. This disease starts slowly. In the beginning people face mild forgetfulness but with the passage of time these symptom becomes noticeable. The common example is that Alzheimer patient may forget to do simple routine task like brushing teeth, combing hair. With passing time is unable to think clearly and start facing problem in speaking, reading and writing. Alzheimer patients also face problem of drastic personality and mood changes. Person having this disease becomes extremely confused, suspicious and fearful. Alzeimer patient completely became incapable to take care of themselves. Thyroid gland problem, drug reactions and severe depression also results in symptoms of Alzheimer disease. Diseases caused by these factors are treatable. Alzheimer Disease is not diagnosed by single tests. Patient has to go through series of test for diagnoses. Medical evaluation for Alzheimer disease may include complete health history of patient, Physical examination, Neurological and mental assessment, Urine and blood analysis, EKG and chest X-rays. In this disease changes to the nerve fiber start building in brain. This in result reduces the effectiveness of the nerve cell. In start of the disease short term memory gets affected. Then as the disease progress the other sections of the brain which control the physical function get affected. The progression rate of this disease varies from person to person. Some patients rapidly get worse while other remain stable for long time. There is no cure for Alzheimer disease but there are certain medications which help in treating the symptoms of this disease. |
