on Sep 8, 2009Chicken pox is the common disease of the children. A child under the age of 12 has more chances of chicken pox. In chicken pox an itching rash like blisters appear all over the body. Chicken pox is caused by the virus called vermicelli zoster. Children can be protected from this virus by VZV vaccines. Vaccination of chicken pox is done between the age of 12 to 15 months. When a child is having chicken pox. Red itchy rashes will first appear on abdomen back or face. Then these rashes start spreading all over the body. In start these rashes look like a small multiple bums like a pimple or insect bite. With time they change into thin walled blisters fill with fluid. Then after some time these blisters breaks, Leaving open sore which get dry with time & become dry brown scabs. These rashes may be severe in kids who are already having skin disorders. In some cases children have fever, abdominal pain, headache & sick feelings day or two before the chickenpox. Chicken pox is although mild illness but people who have weak immune system can get affected severely. Even those kids who have a normal immune system, they get the skin infections near the blisters. Chicken pox is a contagious disease from about 2 days till the time the blisters are crusted over. A child who is having chickenpox should be kept away from others till all blisters have dried. It takes almost 1 week. In order to avoid spreading of this virus to other siblings, It is important to make sure that kids wash their hands frequently especially before eating and after washroom. People who already have a chicken pox as a child are at risk of developing shingles later in life. Shingles is a disease of adults that is caused by the reactivation of chicken pox viruses in a nerve ganglion which is near spinal cord resulting in inflammation, pain, and a rash of small skin blisters. VZZ vaccines are 70-85 % effective in preventing a mild infections. And 95% effective in preventing moderate to sever infections. Therefore parents should try to vaccine their kids for chicken pox when they are 12-15 months old. Although these vaccines are effective but kids who are immunized still will get chickenpox. |
