on Aug 8, 2009There is a thick layer surrounding the earth, this thick layer is called the ozone layer. The oxygen that we inhale consists of two oxygen atoms, but ozone consists of three oxygen atoms. The oxygen that we inhale is colorless and odorless but ozone is of blue color and has a strong adore. There are several layers above the earth 10 km above the earth is a layer call troposphere. And 10-50 km above the earth is stratosphere. Ozone layer is concentrated in this layer. The ozone layer function is to absorb radiation from the sun. The sun emits some dangerous rays Ultraviolet is one of them. UVs are very dangerous rays it can cause skin cancer and are harmful for crops & marine life. Ozone layer prevents these rays from reaching the earth surface. Ozone is divided into two layers good ozone and bad ozone. The layer surrounding the earth which is near to the earth is called bad ozone layer. Because it is air pollutant and is dangerous for human health. The second layer that is extended 10- 30 miles above the earth is called good ozone layer because it absorb harmful rays from the sun and protect human life. Scientist carried out research since long to see the effects of different chemicals on ozone layer. Specially they have done research for CFCs. They found that chlorine from CFCs swimming pool, volcanoes and industries do not reach the stratosphere where ozone layer is found. Chlorine from these resources combines with water and rain out of the layer near the earth without reaching stratosphere. But there is no natural way to remove CFCs from the layer near the earth. With passage of time winds carry these CFCs into the stratosphere. The CFCs are so strongly bound that only heavy rays like UV can break them. And when they break chlorine atom is released and one chlorine atom can destroy 100,000 ozone molecules. The result is the destruction of ozone layer which is getting fast with the passage of time. It is true that ozone layer is not destroying because of the natural resources that release chlorine. Because the chlorine that release from volcanoes and oceans get dissolve in water and is rain out. Basically the chlorine that releases from the resources due to human activities like industries etc.It is causing damage to the ozone layer. There is no way to recover the destruction that has occurred to the ozone layer. But further damage to the ozone layer can be reducing is those activities are curtail in which CFCs is emitted in large amount. |
