on Aug 6, 2009Yes, animals do not commit suicide. Committing suicide means that one is conscious & aware of ending its life. It presumes that something is sentient and knows what it is doing. animal do not has the abstract intelligence to understand and choose death Self protection is one of the most powerful biological forces in the universe, it even some times take the place of the urge to reproduce and protect ones young in some species. An animal may grieve over the loss of their mate; which could possibly cause the animal too much stress which could possibly lead to death but not always. There are many cases in which animals have a long time relation with a companion but still when the lost them they look for another. Animal too experience feeling of sadness when they lose something close to them. Study of wild /domestic animals behavior prove that they are capable of sad feeling when their play/hunt/sex partner dies. This feeling is linked to self conscious that’s why only brainy animals can commit suicide. When dog or cat, following the death of their master they refuse to eat dying of hunger we can call it innocent consequence of the pain that they feel or the attachment they have with their masters. But on the other side if because of the loss they throw themselves from the height, then it’s hard to believe that it’s an informal act or effects of unease they were having. Some animals die because of their own actions but it is difficult to call it as a Suicide. Like wolf spiders are consume by their young, the female is die because of an inbuilt response we can not call it suicide. Some chemical start producing in female bodies which cause the death. Now here life get end due to natural cause we cant call it intentional death or suicide. Same is for female octopus her life get end as soon as her eggs get mature. Now this death occurs in order to make sap ace for new ones development. It can’t be called suicide. Similarly in case of Scorpios it has also been found that, that they will commit suicide by repeatedly stinging themselves in the head. These occur generally because of very high temperature situations. We can say that this behavior is just to lessen their current discomfort. So we can not call it suicide. All above examples prove that animals can kill or badly injured themselves under certain unintentionally/ accidentally circumstances. Even depressed animals, who are clearly suffering from great emotional pain, also seems to be unaware that their acts may lead to end of their life. |
