on Aug 24, 2009Tomato is grouped with vegetables but if botanically studied tomato is a fruit. Hence it will be not wrong to say that tomato is both fruit and vegetable. Tomato is basically originated from South America. In 1500s it was brought to Europe by Spaniards. Later on it spread through out the Asia. Tomatoes are rich of all kinds of health benefits for our body. The most common nutritional benefit of tomato is presence of Lycopene. It is Lycopene which gives red color to tomato. Lycopene is a very important antioxidant. This anti oxidant helps in fighting the cells of cancer. Beside that it also helps against all other health complication. Lycopene is very useful in flushing out the free radicals from the body. These antioxidants do not produce naturally in our body. That’s why human body always required a source to produce the Lycopene. Tomato is the only fruit which contain high ratio of this antioxidant. No other fruit or vegetable contain this healthy ingredient in such high ratio. Tomato if taken with small amount of fats helps in better absorption of Lycopene. This fruit is cropped all over the world. Tomato is useful in preventing heart diseases. It also helps in preventing high cholesterol level. If a person takes daily a glass of tomato juice it will help in getting full benefits of lycopene. Tomato intake reduces the risk of muscular degenerative diseases. It is useful in fight against cancers such as prostate cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, and cancers of the stomach, mouth, pharynx, and esophagus. Lycopene increases when the tomato products are heat processed. Consumption of tomato based product decreases serum lipid oxidation.
