A small roof to the bird-table can stop food being covered by sudden snowfall in winter and provide birds with some shelter in cold weather. A similar roof can be built on the ground to cover the place where birds’ food is usually put.

It is not too difficult a job to make such a roof and ordinary materials can be used. The easiest to make is a simple sloping roof and for this you need a piece of a broad plank. This can be kept in a sloping position on the ground by placing a pair of wooden supports at one end. The plank will provide a sheltered area for the birds and for their food.

Another simple type of roof can be made from two wooden boxes from which two sides have been removed. One of the boxes can act as a roof if placed at the top of a pole and the other as a platform or table.
