How to look after white mice?

on Aug 1, 2009White mice are rarely longer than 10 centimeters from nose to tail. They keep moving about the whole time and you can watch them scampering about for hours in their cages without ever showing any signs of tiredness. One stops occasionally to nibble at some food but it soon starts moving restlessly about again. It likes the company of other white mice especially when it is young. If you buy a male and female mouse make sure you have enough room for their young when they are born or else arrange to give them away or sell them to a pet dealer. You must avoid having too many of these animals and not knowing where to put them. As a rule, a male and female mouse can produce up to ten litters a year with about ten baby mice in each litter. In addition mice mature young, at about two or three months after birth and then start producing litters of their own. This means that, in a relatively short time, your two original mice can found an extremely large family. White mice will eat almost anything. Their best food, however, is a mixture of oats (ten parts) and millet (one part). This mixture should be made into a paste with water, and occasionally a small spoonful of cod liver oil or some vitamin drops can be added. Once a week give the white mice some fruit, lettuce or chicory. Do not give them any cheese. All waste matter connected with white mice must be removed regularly to avoid infection and disease. |
