At first sight coral looks like some fossilized plant. But coral is the ‘skeleton’ of a mass of small animals known as polyps. The polyps emerge from their coral structure, waving their little tentacles to catch scraps of food. They look like small white blobs and have delicate whiskers on the use as fingers to take the food they catch to their mouths. The polyps are always ready to slip back into their coral shelter at the slightest sign of danger.
