How can governments discourage smoking among people?

on May 30, 2009Through active campaigning and laws which prohibit smoking at least in public areas. People may say that this is intervention in the rights of an individual but smokers do it all the time. When a person is smoking in an area where other non-smokers are present, he is making them prone to passive smoking health issues. These cigarette companies make billions of dollars on the health of people without any remorse and ask any unbiased or a doctor who is not on their payroll and he will tell you that smoking kills. Plain and simple. Governments have the responsibility of protecting its citizens from harm. They pass laws against suicide, why shouldn't laws be passed against smoking (a slow form of suicide but nonetheless). If open public places are free from smoking hazards then at least a big sector of passive smoking related injuries can be prevented which will equate to less health care bills. And by campaigning against smoking, and being active in it, may prevent potential starters from taking up the habit. The target should be schools where children can be taught the hazards of smoking and how it affects everyone. They being the next generation may come to the conclusion that it should be stopped all together. |
