The Kashmiris have a particular custom regarding marriage. The young man cannot obtain the hand of his beloved unless he first ‘earns’ or ‘deserves’ her. He does so by working in the house of his future father-in-law. The poorer the young man is, the longer he has to work and quite often this service can last for several years.
