One of the plants that flowers when the snow is still lying on the ground is the snowdrop. The reason why this pretty little white flower can appear so early in the year, despite the cold weather, is the bulb from which it grows. This bulb lies under the ground and out of reach of the frost. It uses whatever warmth is left in the soil and when the air becomes warmer outside it sends out green leafy shoots. The snowdrop is about 10 to 20 centimeters high. The petals that form the corolla have a small green spot at the end. Snowdrops are common in meadows, along the banks of streams and in woods and forests.
